J Cole Dollar and a Dream Tour

12:00 AM

If any of y'all are J Cole fans, then you have probably heard about his Dollar and a Dream Tour. If you aren't J Cole fans or you haven't heard of his tour, then let me give you a crash course. Basically, he's a rapper from Fayetteville, NC (aka the Ville, Fayettenam, or the Nam). This also happens to be where I grew up, as well as several of my friends, two of my roommates, and my boyfriend.  Basically, a lot of the people close to me are especially big fans of his. The Dollar and a Dream Tour goes a little something like this: it's literally $1 to get in and plot twist, it's a secret venue and you don't know where it is until J Cole tweets about it.  Except hundreds of people assumed it would be at Lincoln Theater in Downtown Raleigh so we were already there for hours before he announced it.

Before the stampede.  This wasn't even half of the line.
I like J Cole, but my roommate is a true fan. She's seen him several times in concert, and going to this concert was something she really wanted to do. When I said that I would go with her, neither one of us knew what we were getting ourselves into. We arrived in Raleigh at 11:00am with hopes of getting food before he tweeted and we had to go somewhere. There was a line at one of the venues, Lincoln Theater, which was across from the parking deck. It didn't look too crazy yet, but we knew it would be bad if we didn't get there. Except it was already crazy. We were wrapped around the block, and we were feeling pretty hopeless when suddenly people just started running. Apparently people thought they spotted J Cole and were going to ambush him because that's cool... Morgan and I took the opportunity to run closer to the front of the line. Daddy always told me move your feet, lose your seat.

Keep in mind that J Cole hadn't even released the location. He didn't do that until close to 1:00pm.  He wasn't at the venue when everyone ran to see him.  In fact, he wasn't even in North Carolina yet.

After the stampede...
After that stampede, everyone clumped together in what was quite possibly the most disgusting and uncomfortable situation I've ever been in. We stood there for six hours before trading our dollars for a wristband, squished against a group of complete strangers who were all sweating profusely. People were shoving everyone around and trying to sneak to the front like no one would notice. Surprisingly, only a couple people passed out and I only saw one fight. We waited at this venue just hoping it was the right one for two hours before J Cole even landed in NC and officially announced that it was at Lincoln Theater.  We arrived at 11:00am, didn't for sure know it was there until close to 1:00pm, and got our wristbands at 5:00pm. There were two shows and we got into the second one, so we decided to get McDonald's. After seeing the line we trekked to Chick-Fil-A, which was closed. Back to McDonald's. I was a little irritated, but I ran into a friend I haven't seen in a long time and her new puppy.

After our gourmet meal, there was more waiting. We were told to come back at 8:00pm so we arrived at 6:30pm to get close to the stage. We didn't get in until probably 10:30pm, and by then there were crowds of people who sneaked in front of us so they could be closer to the stage. The opening act, Bas, performed and he was great, but we were so ready to see J Cole.  Sadly, we had to leave early for personal reasons and we only got to see J Cole perform a couple of songs.  It was awesome to see him and the experience was an interesting one, but I was exhausted and I did not fit in with that crowd.  The things people will do for J Cole is ridiculous...

P.S. I did not leave bed on Sunday.  In fact, I accidentally slept until 4:00pm.  There goes my sleep schedule...

  1. Wow - I wouldn't go to that much trouble for any pop star/celebrity - not even the Rolling Stones! I've definitely got better things to do in my day than hang round a theatre all day. I guess you didn't know the day was going to be like that when you started out!
