Saving Money at CVS

11:53 PM

Yesterday I went to CVS to see if I have any skills when it comes to coupons and sales.  I'm actually not too bad, and I think I'll be able to get even better at this when I have access to a car and can therefore shop at various places.  I tweeted about spending about $60, but saving $50 and Lauren asked me to blog about it.  So here it is!  I know it's not one of those crazy stories about being paid to take home $1,000 worth of stuff, but it's pretty realistic for someone like me (AKA a college student with limited funds and no car who only buys what she knows she'll use).  I figured I would offer a couple of tips and do a breakdown of each item that I purchased.  There were a couple of errors so I'm probably going to go back and talk to them about it, but for now this will do.  I'm hoping to actually save about $7 more.  I also plan on getting three Pantene items for $4.00 thanks to a great sale, an awesome coupon, and $1 in Extra Bucks from the tampons and pads I bought.

(Two) Clairol Natural Instincts // originally $8.99, on sale for 2/$12.  $5/2 coupon.  Final price: $3.50 each

Gain Flings (14 ct) // originally $5.49, on sale for $4.99.  $2/1 coupon.  Final price: $2.99

Bio True (10 oz) // originally $11.49.  $2/1 coupon. Final price: $9.49.

(Two) Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes // originally $8.49 each, on sale for buy one get one 50% off.  $3/2 coupon.  $3 off of $12 facial care coupon.  Final price: $3.37 each.
*This didn't ring up right.  The BOGO didn't show up, so I'll see if they can do something about it.

CVS 5 Blade Cartridges (4 ct) // originally $9.99, on sale for buy one get one 50% off all CVS shave care.  $4 off of $10 shave needs coupon. Final price included in next final price.

Just the Basics Shave Cream //  originally $1.67, on sale for buy one get one 50% off all CVS shave care.  $4 off of $10 shave needs coupon. Final price for both: $6.82

Tampax Radiant (16 ct) // originally $5.79, on sale for $4.49.  $2/1 coupon.  25% off of all feminine care products on Extra Care card. Final price: $1.87
The 25% didn't come off like it was supposed to, so I'm also looking into getting that taken care of.

Always Radiant (12 ct) // originally $5.49, on sale for $4.49.  $2/1 coupon.  25% off of all feminine care products on Extra Care card.  Final price: $1.87
* The 25% didn't come off like it was supposed to, so I'm also looking into getting that taken care of.

CoverGirl Lash Blast Length // originally $8.99, on sale for $4.49.  $3/1 coupon.  30% off of cosmetics on Extra Care card.  Final price: $1.05
*I'm not sure if the 30% came off, so I'm looking into that.

(Two) Secret Scent Expressions // originally $5.99 each, on sale for buy one get one 50% off.  $2/2 coupon. Two $1 off of $4 of deodorant coupons from Extra Care Card/coupon center.  Final price: $2.49 each

Rimmel London Stay Matte Foundation // originally $5.49.  $1/1 coupon.  30% off cosmetics on Extra Care card.  Final price: $3.15.
* Like I said about the 30%...

Quick tips:
- If you don't have an Extra Care card, get one.  It's how you redeem special offers, access the coupon center, receive discounts, and earn Extra Bucks.  If you just keep using the store's card, it isn't as helpful.
- If you think you might use a coupon at all, clip it and save it until the item is on sale and you decide to buy it.  Don't buy useless items, but if it's between two brands or something then just see how it plays out.
- Check the sale ads to see what they have on sale, look for coupons, and check the coupon center. Also check online to see if there's anything you can send to your card.  Look out for helpful emails about savings and discounts.
- Just hand them everything and see if it works. I know that sounds dumb, but sometimes you get a really nice manager and sometimes you get a stickler who notices every exception and rule.  The worst that can happen is that they tell you that you can't use all of the coupons and discounts together.  I've been pretty lucky, minus the couple of errors I mentioned above.

  1. Yay! This is awesome! I have one question though - Is the Extra Care card different from the CVS card? I can't believe how much money you saved, especially on the mascara and feminine products! Thank you for this!

  2. Yay a fellow deal seeker! I swear, trips NEVER turned out as planned. I always spend hours looking at my receipt afterwards trying to figure out what happened and if it's worth it to go back in and fight it.
