Saving Money in College

12:00 AM

Paying for college is hard.  Whether it's you or your parents, it really takes a financial toll.  You might be depleting your savings, working your hardest, and taking out loans.  So while you're paying for your education, it's important to save money on other things.  Today I want to talk about school supplies.
Most college students have a laptop, which means you have access to plenty of note-taking programs.  Microsoft Word, Google Drive, and Evernote are some of my favorites.  Don't spend money on notebooks and binders if you don't necessarily need them.  You'll have all of your documents in one place, so you won't have to worry about bringing the wrong notebook with you.

Don't eat out frequently.  I can tell you right now that the majority of charges on my card are from fast food and restaurants.  Make breakfast at home, pack a lunch, and enjoy a homemade dinner.  Pack snacks in case you get hungry during lecture.  Your bank account and your health will thank you for this.  Bring a reusable water bottle so you aren't constantly buying plastic ones!

When you purchase a tote or backpack, make sure you get something you'll like in a few years and is durable.  If you have to purchase a new backpack every couple of years, it will add up quicker than you think

If you listen to nothing else, please listen to this: rent your textbooks.  You will save 40-90%, which really makes a difference when your textbook bill might be around $1,000 a semester.  I use campusbookrentals.com to rent my textbooks, and I would recommend them to any college student. They don't mind if you highlight in your books, and shipping and returns are free and simple.  And if you have any books that your purchased, you can send them to rentback.com and have them rent it out for you and send you the profits.  The company donates a portion of their funds to Operation Smile, a charity that provides cleft lip and cleft palate operations for children in low and middle income countries.
